hard-copy:
Economist (weekly) - this is hands-down my best source for unbiased info on global happenings
Atlantic (monthly) - their in-depth articles are wonderful .. and i've seen this time & again - you'd read an article here, and 6 months later, the rest of the media would be talking about it (Robert Kaplan's columns for instance are a must-read for me)..... Plus, a window into who's gathering steam in the literary area - they showcase new authors
New Yorker (weekly) - i look here for literary stuff more than current affairs
Granta (quarterly) - again, hands-down, my best source for the literary scene in the global English-writing world
when I'm travelling overseas: Financial Times (UK), International Herald Tribune
Online:
CSM ( Christian Science Monitor ), of course ... i used to even subscribe to this one a few years ago, but don't have the time these days
Guardian ( The Guardian ), Independent ( The Independent ) .. caveat - they are both liberal-leaning, the latter even more than the former ... but both are effective antidotes to the lightweight (with exceptions) Time's & the Newsweek's
IHT, the online version ( International Herald Tribune )
Salon ( Salon )
Asia Times Online ( asia times online ) .. they have great in-depth current affairs articles on south asia ... a couple of years ago, for example, they had a fantastic series on the LTTE in Sri Lanka
On TV
The NewsHour on PBS (now Lehrer, and previously McNeil-Lehrer)
BBC World News (we get it on BBC America, presumably one of the gazillion channels you're planning to get, at 3pm Pacific ... and again on a local public channel at 6pm Pacific)
.... will update with more if I remember anything else ... :-))))
